In a message dated 9/26/2005 10:00:34 AM Eastern Standard Time, ClaireJJordan53 writes:
My father, Avon L. Jordan, is the grandson of Minnie Griffis, and nephew of Alfred, Dewey, Gene (Claude Eugene), Vollie, and Bessie Griffis.

He told me that Dewey Griffis settled in the Waldo area and in fact said that he had a farm with log cabin in the back of what is now the flea market along 301. I do not know if you knew this but Dewey Griffis took in John C. (J.C.) Jordan and Eloise Jordan when their mother Betty Becky Griffis (married to Ira Jordan) left her children in a pea field and went off with Henry Williams. The children were split up and many of Betty Becky's brothers raised the children.

MINNIE GRIFFIS JAN 25 1883 SENT TO ME BY CLAIR J JORDAN

Descendants of Minnie Griffis

Generation No. 1

1. MINNIE6 GRIFFIS (SAMUEL5, BERRY BERRIAN4, SAMUEL B.3, JOHN2, JOSEPH1) was born 25 Jan 1883 in Headlight Clinch County Georgia, and died in Headlight Clinch County Georgia. She married JOHN GRIFFIS.
Notes for MINNIE GRIFFIS:
Common Law Marriage
Eloise Jordan told Claire Jordan that Becky Griffis' father had left her property upon his death. In researching the materials I found that Becky Griffis was an heir to John Griffis.
Also, Eloise Jordan and Avon L. Jordan told Claire Jordan that Minnie Griffis was through out of her house when she was pregnant and her father gave her a parcial of land. Minnie Griffis cut rail road cross ties to support herself and her children.

Notes for JOHN GRIFFIS:
Eloise Jordan, prior to her death, informed Claire Jordan that Betty Becky Griffis' father left her property (land and cattle) upon his death.
In researching this information, Betty Becky Griffis was mentioned in the will of John Griffis (a cousin of Minnie Griffis). However, no true marriage was record was found. Therefore, it is accepted that it was a common law marriage.

Descendants of Robert G Griffis 1887 Emma Alice DeLoach 1887

Generation No. 1

1. ROBERT G2 GRIFFIS (BERRY1) was born December 25 1887 in Clinch County, Georgia, and died January 28 1953 in Headlight, Clinch County, Georgia. He married EMMA ALICE DELOACH March 30, 1903 daughter of HENRY E DELOACH and SARAH LNU. She was born March 13 1887, and died August 30 1946.

Notes for ROBERT G GRIFFIS:
History of Clinch County

Clinch County was established in February 4, 1850 and was named for the recently deceased General Duncan L. Clinch. After a long military career serving in the War of 1812, and the Florida Indian wars from 1836-38, he also had campaigned for governor of Georgia against George W. Towns in 1847 but was defeated. Ironically, it was Governor Towns who named the county for his opponent. In the group to promote the creation of a new county was James W. STATEN, Elijah MATTOX, John TOMLINSON, Jr., and Benjamin SIRMANS.

Lands of Ware and Lowndes contributed to the formation and is bounded thus, "commencing at the mouth of Cane Creek where it empties into the Okefenokee Swamp, thence along said creek to the ford at Daniel LANE's, thence a direct line to the mouth of Reedy Creek where it empties into the Satilla River near John B. WALL's, then the river to be the line up to the county line, thence the county line to the Florida line, to the Okefinokee Swamp; the territory thus included shall form a new county to be called the County of Clinch."

While the original county seat was Polk, eventually it was moved to Homerville. The first commissioners appointed to manage the new county were: Elijah MATTOX, Simon W. NICHOLS, Timothy KIRKLAND, Benjamin SIRMANS, and John J. JOHNSON. Other such notables in the new administration were: Johnathan KNIGHT, Simon W. NICHOLS, Charles COWART, Benjamin CORNELIUS, Isham F. JOHNSON, Hiram SEARS, Manning SMITH, David BLACKBURN, and John MATHIS.

These lands are about 1 1/2 miles northeasterly from Homerville, and were sold y Mr. Kight in 1862 to Robert B. Crum who "refuged" to this county from Camden County that year on account of Camden's exposure to enemy attack during the war. So, after having lived there for eighteen years Mr. Kight moved down into the 12th land district about ten miles southwestwardly from his former home, where he acquired a tract of land with a farm on it and lived there until his death in 1887.

The first Mrs. Kight died about 1868-70 and Mr. Kight then married Sarah Ann Griffis, born 1837 daughter of Berry Griffis. They had no children.

IF CHARLES GRIFFIS was born in 1759 he is not a son of John Griffis and is most likely a brother of John Griffis, more research is needed.

Children of John Griffis and Barbara LNU are:
2 i. Samuel Griffis, born Abt. 1775 in Four Holes, Orangeburg Co., SC; died December 30, 1859 in Homerville, Clinch Co., GA; married (1) Nancy (Unknown) (AMERICAN INDIAN)?? 1793 in Georgia; married (2) Mary "Polly" Register December 05, 1835 in Ware County, Georgia.

Notes for John Griffis:
Mr. Robert J. Robinson:
John Griffis lived in Bullock & Montgomery Counties, and was cut into Emanuel County, in 1812. He was a Justice of Inferior Court of Emanuel County from 1817 until May 1821, when he moved from the County. He moved to Appling County, where he was immediately elected to a vacancy on the Inferior Court bench of the the newly-formed County. He was commissioned Nov. 12, 1821, and served until he died in March 1824.
And apprisement of his estate in Appling County was made September 21, 1825 by Abraham Eason, Samuel Griffis and Joel Griffis, appraisers, and a copy sent to Emanuel County and recorded. The Appling County estate records having been burned, this Emanuel County record is the only record that can be found of his estate.
The widow returned to Emanuel County, and qualified as guardian for the children, except Elizabeth, Feb 6, 1826. She was appointed administratrix September 5, 1825 in Emanuel County.

Generation No. 4

8. Joseph Griffis, born Abt. 1723 in Germany??; died Unknown. He married 9. Margaret Hutto Abt. 1743 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina4.
9. Margaret Hutto4, died Unknown. She was the daughter of 18. Issac Hutto.

Notes for Joseph Griffis:
Mr. Robert James Robinson:
The Griffis family was among a group of people from Germany and Holland that settled in Orangeburg District of South Carolina in 1735. Three of those people by the name Griffis came to South Gerogia. Tradition has it that they were brothers but I have problem with that, I think more likely that they were uncle and nephews, and that Charles was the brother of John. I find in the Lutheran Church records of two brothers by the name of Joseph and Peter Griffis, who appear to have married sisters by the name of Hutto, being daughters of Issac Hutto. The only or first John I can find was born in 1754 and baptized or christened 17 July 175 in Orangeburg District of South Carolina, it is my belief tht this is the John Griffis who married Barbara and had at least two sons, namely Samuel and John, may have been others. This John was the son of Joseph Griffis who was born abut 1723, I am still searching for the immigrant ancestor. (Book written 29 April 1996)

Children of Joseph Griffis and Margaret Hutto are:

Notes for Charles Griffis:
Mr. Robert James Robinson:
Charles Griffis was a Revolutionary Soldier evidently in the South Carolina Line. Details of service unknown, no record found there of his service. His son Kindred, said his father was in the engagements with the noted Tory, Col. Carleton, and was present at Yorktown with his command at the surrender. Charles Griffis drew land as a Revolutionay Soldier in 1827 Georgia Land Lottery, a resident at the time of Ware (now Clinch) County. He is listed in the 1790 census of Orangeburg District, South Carolina but was not married at the time, living at the time with his widowed mother. His grave was marked in 1950 by the DAR.
The first known record in Georgia of Charles Griffis appears to be the tax-digest of Montomery county for the year 1806 at which time he was living in the 57th District and owned 200 acres of land. However, census records of the children shows that all of them were born in Georgia.
Charles was living in Appling County in the 1820 census. It was about 1822 that he moved futher south into what was then Appling County on account of his large droves of cattle. He settled land lot #195, 7th District, now Clinch County. He lived there until his death.
Juniper Griffis was administrator of his father's estate, and was appointed in 1844 as such by the Inferior Court of Ware County.
The 1790 census of Orangeburg District, South Carolina shows Charles Griffis. He and two females are listed. He is listed in 1830 & 1840 in Ware County, Georgia.
