2. REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER CHARLES2 GRIFFIS (JOHN1)2,3,4,5 was born 1759 in Orangeburg District, Four Holes, South Carolina, and died August 1844 in Clinch County, Georgia, buried in Guest Millpond Cemetery. He married CHARITY BRASWELL6 WFT Est. 1787-1818, daughter of KINDRED BRASWELL and RHODA UNKNOWN. She was born Abt. 1775, and died 1849 in Clinch County, Georgia, buried in Guest Millpond Cemetery.
Notes for REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER CHARLES GRIFFIS: Charles, a revolutionary soldier, was born in Orangeburg District of South Carolina in 1759. He may be the son of John and Barbara Griffis of Four Holes, Orangeburg County. John was killed in the Revolutionary War. Due to loss of the Orangeburg County records it is impossible to learn much about the Griffis antecedents there. It is known that on account of John's death, Charles took his younger brother Samuel, who was at the time hardly grown, and moved to Georgia during the 1790s, there he married a widow by the name of Mrs. Charity Rich. She was born about 1770 and died in 1849. (Charity was the daughter of Kindred Braswell of Georgia)
The first known record in Georgia of Charles appears to be the tax-digest of Montgomery County for the year 1806 at which time he was living in the 57th District and owned 200 acres of land. However, the census record of the children show that all of them were born in Georgia.
He was living in Appling County in the 1820 Census. It was about 1821-22 that he moved further south into what was then Appling County on account of his large herd of cattle. He settled on Lot of Land 195, 7th district (territory now in Atkinson County) and lifed there about two years, after that he moved to Lot 247, 7th district (territory that is now Clinch County). He lived on this latter lot until his death in August 1844. He and his wife were buried in nearby Guest Millpond Cemetery where the John Floyd Chapter, D.A.R. placed a marker over his grave in 1950. The Griffis homeplace was cut out of Appling into Ware County in 1825, and changed out of Ware into Clinch in 1850.
Charles served in one of the South Carolina regiments in the Continental Line. He was present at Cornwallis' Surrender at Yorktown and in his last years, often recalled details of that memorable occasion. He was granted land in Georgia in 1827 as a Revolutionary Soldier.
****See Knight's Roster of the Revolution pages 354 and 464.
Mrs. Eva Griffis Kirkland and several other ladies of Atkinson County, are members of the John Floyd Chapter, D.A.R. as descendants of Charles Griffis, R.S.
Juniper Griffis was administrator of his father's estate, and was appointed in 1844 as such by the Inferior Court of Ware County.
The 1790 Census of Orangeburg, S.C. (territory probably now in Barnwell County) shows Charles Griffis' family to have consisted of self and two females, the latter though to have been his mother and sister since he was not married at the time.

Notes for SAMUEL GRIFFIS: Samuel Griffis was born in 1775 in Orangeburg district of South Carolina. He was the younger brother of Charles a Revolutionary Soldier and believed to be the son of John who died in the Revolutionary War as a soldier. Samuel was brought to Georgia as a minor by his brother and shortly after coming to Georgia he was married but I have not been able to learn his wife's name or where married. She died about 1830. He remarried for a second time Miss Mary "Pollie" Register, daughter of John Register a Revolutionary Soldier of Bulloch County. She was born in Sampson County North Carolina in 1787 and died in Clinch County on Sept. 18, 1889 at 102 years old. She had no children. All of Samuel's children were from his first wife.
Samuel sometime about 1819 moved to Appling co. probably in connection with his brother and his family, but he did not move on further into Appling about 1822-23 when his brother did, but remained in Appling co. until about 1833 when he moved to the 12th land district of Ware co. (territory that is now Clinch). He was cut into the new county of Clinch out of Ware, in Feb 1850. He died at his home a few miles south of Homerville in 1859. He lived on lot 484, 12 district, where his son, Samuel also lived and died. He was buried in a family burying ground on the old homeplace.
Mrs. Griffis the second wife was a member of Prospect Primitive Baptist Church in Clinch County, for ten years. She united by letter Jan 22, 1859 with the church Prospect and was dismissed by letter July 10 1869. She later united with Wayfare Church nearer to where she lived. She died at the home of her deceased brother, Samuel Register, and was buried at Wayfare.

Samuel and his second wife were married in Ware County, now Clinch County 12-5-1835, the ceremony being performed by David Register, Justice of the Peace, a nephew of his second wife.
He died at his home in Clinch County 12-30-1851.
He served as private in the Indian War under Capt. Levi J. Knight.
Samuel appeared in Appling Co first census, 1820, as head of household.

Notes for JOHN GRIFFIS: John Griffis was born in Orangeburg District South Carolina about 1778 and was a brother of Chalres and Samuel Griffis. They were sons of John and Barbara Griffis. The elder Griffis lost his life in the Revolutionary War. The three sons came to Georgia in the 1790s and married in that state. John Griffis married Sarah daughter of Reubin Neel of Emanuel County.
John Griffis lived in Bulloch and Montgomery Counties but in the formation of Emanuel County in 1812 appears to have been cut into it. He was Justice of Inferior Court of Emanuel County from 1817 until May 1821 when the Executive Department records show he had removed from the County. He moved to Appling County where it appears he was immediately elected to a vacancy on the Inferior Court bench of that newly formed county. He was commissioned Nov 12 1821, to the inferior court of Applin, and served until early in 1824 when he died. He apparently died in March 1824. An appraisement of his estate in Appling County was made Sept 21 1825. by Abraham Eason, Samuel Griffis and Joel Griffis, appraisers, and a copy was sent to Emanuel County and recorded. The Appling County estate records having been burned this Emanuel county record is the only record that can be found in his estate.
The widow returned to Emanuel County, and qualified as guardian for the children except Elizabeth Feb 6 1826. Elizabeth was appointed administrator Sept 5 1825 in Emanuel County. Children of JOHN GRIFFIS and SARAH NEEL are: i. ELIZABETH3 GRIFFIS, b. 1800; d. WFT Est. 1823-1894; m. JOHN HUNTER, August 31, 1817; b. WFT Est. 1772-1800; d. WFT Est. 1822-1887. ii.
