4. John Griffis4, born 1754 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died Bet. 1781 - 1783 in South Carolina. He was the son of 8. Joseph Griffis and 9. Margaret Hutto. He married 5. Barbara LNU Abt. 1773 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina4. 5. Barbara LNU4, born Abt. 1737; died Unknown.
Notes for John Griffis: Mr. Robert James Robinson: Stub entries to Indents-issued in payment of claims against South Carolina growing out of the Revolution, Book C, page 36, no. 215--Mrs. Barbara Griffiths for 5 pounds 15 shillings and 6 pence sterling. Book D., page 156, no. 109, issued the 20th of Dec. 1783 to Barbara Griffiths, Admix. for the Estate of John Griffiths, deceased for provisions supplied the Continental Army and Militia in Aug, and Nov. 1781, two accounts audited for 6 pounds 18 shillings and 7 pence sterling, interest 9 shillings, 8 pence sterling. Land Grant issued to Barbara Griffis for 100 acres of land on North Side of Four Hole Swamp in Orangeburg District, South Carolina 5 Feb. 1787. Land Grant issued to Barbery Griffis for 100 acres on North Side of Four Hole Swamp in Orangeburg District, South Carolina 6 Oct 1786. Stub interies--Book 3, page 66, No. 359, issued 26 Nov. 1785 to _______________ for Estate of Mr. John Griffis for militia duty as Captain, 38 pounds, 11 shillings, 5 pence sterling with interest 2 pounds, 13 shellings, 11 pence sterling. John Griffis was killed in Revolutionary War. He served as a Captain in the Militia under Gerneral Marion (Swamp Fox) during 1781 and was dead prior to November 1785. IF CHARLES GRIFFIS was born in 1759 he is not a son of John Griffis and is most likely a brother of John Griffis, more research is needed.
Children of John Griffis and Barbara LNU are: 2 i. Samuel Griffis, born Abt. 1775 in Four Holes, Orangeburg Co., SC; died December 30, 1859 in Homerville, Clinch Co., GA; married (1) Nancy (Unknown) (AMERICAN INDIAN)?? 1793 in Georgia; married (2) Mary "Polly" Register December 05, 1835 in Ware County, Georgia. ii. John Griffis4, born 1778 in Four Holes, Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died March 1824 in Appling County, Georgia; married Sarah Neel Abt. 17994; died Unknown.
Notes for John Griffis: Mr. Robert J. Robinson: John Griffis lived in Bullock & Montgomery Counties, and was cut into Emanuel County, in 1812. He was a Justice of Inferior Court of Emanuel County from 1817 until May 1821, when he moved from the County. He moved to Appling County, where he was immediately elected to a vacancy on the Inferior Court bench of the the newly-formed County. He was commissioned Nov. 12, 1821, and served until he died in March 1824. And apprisement of his estate in Appling County was made September 21, 1825 by Abraham Eason, Samuel Griffis and Joel Griffis, appraisers, and a copy sent to Emanuel County and recorded. The Appling County estate records having been burned, this Emanuel County record is the only record that can be found of his estate. The widow returned to Emanuel County, and qualified as guardian for the children, except Elizabeth, Feb 6, 1826. She was appointed administratrix September 5, 1825 in Emanuel County.
Generation No. 4
8. Joseph Griffis, born Abt. 1723 in Germany??; died Unknown. He married 9. Margaret Hutto Abt. 1743 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina4. 9. Margaret Hutto4, died Unknown. She was the daughter of 18. Issac Hutto.
Notes for Joseph Griffis: Mr. Robert James Robinson: The Griffis family was among a group of people from Germany and Holland that settled in Orangeburg District of South Carolina in 1735. Three of those people by the name Griffis came to South Gerogia. Tradition has it that they were brothers but I have problem with that, I think more likely that they were uncle and nephews, and that Charles was the brother of John. I find in the Lutheran Church records of two brothers by the name of Joseph and Peter Griffis, who appear to have married sisters by the name of Hutto, being daughters of Issac Hutto. The only or first John I can find was born in 1754 and baptized or christened 17 July 175 in Orangeburg District of South Carolina, it is my belief tht this is the John Griffis who married Barbara and had at least two sons, namely Samuel and John, may have been others. This John was the son of Joseph Griffis who was born abut 1723, I am still searching for the immigrant ancestor. (Book written 29 April 1996) Children of Joseph Griffis and Margaret Hutto are: i. Samuel Griffis4, born 1747 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died Unknown.

4 iv. John Griffis, born 1754 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died Bet. 1781 - 1783 in South Carolina; married Barbara LNU Abt. 1773 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina. v. Abraham Griffis4, born 1757 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died Unknown.

vi. Charles Griffis4, born 1759 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died August 10, 1844 in Clinch County, Georgia; married Charity Braswell Rich Aft. 1798 in Georgia4; born 1770; died 1849.
Notes for Charles Griffis: Mr. Robert James Robinson: Charles Griffis was a Revolutionary Soldier evidently in the South Carolina Line. Details of service unknown, no record found there of his service. His son Kindred, said his father was in the engagements with the noted Tory, Col. Carleton, and was present at Yorktown with his command at the surrender. Charles Griffis drew land as a Revolutionay Soldier in 1827 Georgia Land Lottery, a resident at the time of Ware (now Clinch) County. He is listed in the 1790 census of Orangeburg District, South Carolina but was not married at the time, living at the time with his widowed mother. His grave was marked in 1950 by the DAR. The first known record in Georgia of Charles Griffis appears to be the tax-digest of Montomery county for the year 1806 at which time he was living in the 57th District and owned 200 acres of land. However, census records of the children shows that all of them were born in Georgia. Charles was living in Appling County in the 1820 census. It was about 1822 that he moved futher south into what was then Appling County on account of his large droves of cattle. He settled land lot #195, 7th District, now Clinch County. He lived there until his death. Juniper Griffis was administrator of his father's estate, and was appointed in 1844 as such by the Inferior Court of Ware County. The 1790 census of Orangeburg District, South Carolina shows Charles Griffis. He and two females are listed. He is listed in 1830 & 1840 in Ware County, Georgia.

John Griffis migrated to Florida from Georgia in search of better pasture land for his large herd of cattle and hogs. John moved to the northwestern section of what was later Bradford County. There were only two other familes living in the area at that time. They settled near New River. Depending on which side of the family tells the story James "Jim" Griffis,(born 1813) came down here first and then went back to Georgia got his family and John and they came back and settled in the counties. John stole Easter Padgett from her husband and they brought Easter's daughter, Rebecca, with them to Florida. Mr. Stavley took the rest of the children and moved to Lousiana. John and Easter did a lot of hiding on their trip back to Florida so that her husband couldn't find them. More information will be under Westberry Griffis.
